YouTube has finally rolled out Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for iPhone and iPad, according to a MacRumors report. PiP support means users can watch videos on YouTube while using other apps on their mobile devices.
When you close the YouTube app, the video will appear in a small window that you can move to different corners of the screen.
It’s worth noting that the PiP feature is available to Android YouTube YouTube users as Android Oreo and iOS users are now getting it. However, according to YouTube, the functionality is only available to iOS users who have a YouTube Premium subscription. However, the company plans to soon expand PiP support to all iPhone users in the US.
Picture-in-Picture Mode Feature
Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows users to watch YouTube videos in a small mini-player. It will at the same time surf on their mobile devices outside of the YouTube app. We started rolling out PiP to YouTube Premium subscribers on iOS. We plan to roll out PiP to all iOS users in the US,” said a statement from YouTube.
It should be noted that the PiP feature is available to Android YouTube subscribers as Android Oreo and iOS subscribers already get it.
However, according to YouTube, the feature will only be available to iOS subscribers who have a YouTube Premium subscription. However, the company plans to quickly expand PiP support to all iPhone customers in the United States.
If you have PiP mode on YouTube, you can activate it by playing a video in the app and then dragging it home. The video will continue to play in a small window that you will see at the bottom of the screen. You can move the mini-player by dragging it. YouTube also lets you resize the mini player by pressing with two fingers.
iPhone’s picture-in-picture mode is now available to some third-party video viewers, including Netflix and Disney+. With YouTube being the most used video viewing platform, its support is likely a welcome addition. Once available on iPhone, swiping up (or pressing the home button on older models) will activate PiP.
It automatically shrink YouTube videos to thumbnails at the bottom of the iPhone screen.
Users can actually drag and position the YouTube picture-in-picture window where they want. When you’re done, drag the window down or tap the “X” in the top right corner to close the PiP window.
