World Health Organization officials said that six to eight million people worldwide may have died during the ongoing Covid pandemic.
When publishing its annual report on world health statistics, WHO estimates the total number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 will be at least 3 million by 2020, which is 1.2 million more than reported.
“We are likely to face significantly fewer deaths that are directly and indirectly caused by COVID-19,” the report said.

“That figure is actually going to be two to three times higher. So I think 6 to 8 million deaths can be estimated with a warning,” Samira Asma, WHO deputy director-general for data and analysis, told a news conference.
WHO data analyst William Msemburi said the higher death rate included unreported deaths from COVID-19 and indirect deaths due to a lack of hospital beds and medical equipment.
“The challenge is that the reported [number of] COVID-19 victims are not sufficient for this full impact,” Msemburi was quoted as saying by Reuters.
