Twitter Bans US Congresswomen Marjorie Taylor Greene’s account over COVID Misinformation

According to Twitter, US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene personal account has been banned for violating COVID misinformation. According to Twitter, the personal account of Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) has been permanently suspended “for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy,” which was instituted in 2015. Her official government account continues to be operational.

In addition, Rep. Greene has been prolific in his posting of articles and statistics supposedly pertaining to the pandemic, which are frequently misleading or outright incorrect.

This is one of the topics on which Twitter has drawn a line in the sand, as misinformation on the virus, how it spreads, the efficacy of the vaccines, etc has a serious effect on public health.

In a statement, Twitter stated that “we’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy.” Twitter’s COVID-19 policy can be found here.

Twitter Early Warnings to Marjorie Taylor Greene

Several shorter account locks and warnings were issued and reported on throughout the course of the year 2021, leading to the permanent suspension. Greene complained then of violations of her “freedom of speech,” despite Twitter being a privately owned and operated platform with clearly stated rules, and made a final complaint in a statement this morning: “Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth. That’s fine, I’ll demonstrate to America that we don’t require their assistance and that it is time to defeat our adversaries.”

Although it’s not clear from her statement whether she intends to discontinue her own use of the “enemy” platform, which she claims she doesn’t require, Her official United States Representative account is still active, despite the fact that she has not used it in over a week.

After contacting Twitter to inquire whether this account has been placed in jeopardy as a result of her violations, I will update this post if I receive a response.

Twitter regularly issues bans to fringe figures who have violated rules on inciting violence, publishing false or private information, or spreading false information regarding the pandemic.
