Tom Cruise has been making headlines ever since he joined the controversial religion of Scientology in the 1980s. Recently, Alex Gibney, the director of the 2015 Scientology documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, expressed his surprise over the lack of accountability for the Top Gun: Maverick star.
In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Gibney was asked why Tom Cruise had not been questioned about his involvement in Scientology in the eight years since the release of Going Clear. Gibney agreed with the interviewer and stated that he was surprised by Cruise’s lack of reckoning for his association with the religion.
Gibney further stated that although Cruise has stepped away from being an ambassador for Scientology, he hasn’t faced any consequences for his involvement in the religion. He recalled how Cruise used to have a Scientology tent on the set of his 2005 movie War of the Worlds.
It’s not just Gibney who has criticized Cruise’s links with Scientology. Earlier this year, Judd Apatow made fun of Cruise’s association with the religion while hosting the Directors Guild of America Awards.
