On Friday, the Islamabad High Court(IHC) demanded a report on standard operating procedures (SOPs) to stop the abuse of cyber-crime law from the Federal Investigative Agency[FIA] and instructed the agency to engage journalist representation organizations.
IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah repeated the hearing for citizens, and in particular journalists, of successive notifications issued by the Cyber-Crimes Wing (CCW) of the FIA.
The other Attorney General told the Court that the CCW received 22,877 complaints, including 30 complaints against journalists, in accordance with the Electronic Crimes Act (Peca).
The investigative agency was urged by Justice Minallah to dissipate the feeling that journalists are being criticized by governments and institutions.
He added that it should be discouraged to submit hate content.
Justice Minallah called on FIA to include the Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) from Pakistan and other stakeholders to implement SOPs to ensure the abuse of Peca.
The chief judge reminded out that the CCW had summoned him to check about his sources of data, while he was referring to the actions of the FIA against a journalist. “Is that a state of police? It never occurs in any part of the world.”
