The Americans, a popular television series, celebrated its 10th anniversary recently. During a panel discussion at the Paley Center for Media, show producer Joel Fields shared an amusing anecdote about Matthew Rhys, who played the character of Philip Jennings on the show, and how he pulled a drunken prank on his co-star Keri Russell and the writers’ room.

According to Fields, he and show creator Joe Weisberg walked into the writers’ room one day and found that someone had defaced pictures of Rhys and Russell. A devil was drawn on Rhys’ picture, while Russell’s picture had a funny mustache. Fields expressed his concern to the staff, stating that while it was okay to have fun, the workplace needed to be professional and respectful. He asked for the person responsible to step forward, and one of the assistants finally admitted that it was Rhys.

Fields then revealed that Rhys had defaced his headshot after a boozy lunch. He had decided to experiment with new disguise options, resulting in the hilarious prank on Russell and himself.

The incident added to the fun and camaraderie on the set of The Americans, which aired from 2013 to 2018. The series was highly acclaimed for its plot, character development, and performances, including those of Rhys and Russell.
