Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, announced on Tuesday that the company’s instant messaging app had gained a whopping 70 million new users in a single day, describing it as “a record surge in user registration and engagement.”
Despite the record increase, Durov expressed his pride in the way his staff managed the situation. “Telegram continues to function flawlessly for the great majority of our users,” he said on his Telegram channel. However, the day was not without its flaws.
Telegram CEO Statement after Gaining 70M users

Durov noted that some customers in the Americas may have noticed slower speeds as a result of the large number of people that signed up at the same time, but that the service continued to function normally for the vast majority of users.
Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s antitrust commissioner, said the outage highlighted the consequences of depending on a small number of major firms and emphasized the need for additional competitors.
Russia asserted that the episode demonstrated that the country was correct in developing its own sovereign internet platforms and social networking sites.
Trading of assets ranging from cryptocurrency to Russian oil was affected by WhatsApp’s almost six-hour outage on Monday, according to market participants, although a swift move to other platforms such as Telegram prevented widespread disruption.
