In-app lyrics have long been requested by consumers, particularly in the US, but Spotify has finally responded. With Musixmatch, Spotify can now deliver lyrics to users in India, Pakistan, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
After testing the feature in 2019, Spotify rolled it out globally last year in 26 markets. According to the firm, this was the first time lyrics have supported in 22 of 26 markets. The deal then grew to 28 cities. Spotify users in Japan have also had access to lyrics via SyncPower.
The feature has debuted in 2016 in cooperation with Genius and included lyrics intermingled with knowledge about the music, its meaning, the singer, and other remarks. Thousands of users have told Spotify through its community feedback site that they prefer real-time lyrics to songs interspersed with facts and other background information.
Apparently, Spotify is retiring “Behind the Lyrics” to make space for the new Lyrics section. Lyrics will be available from the “Now Playing” display or bar on all platforms.
Lyrics scroll in real time while the song plays on mobile devices. Instead, click the microphone symbol in the “Now Playing” area. On the Spotify TV app, tap the lyrics button in the top-right corner of the “Now Playing” view to enable lyrics.
Their wish has Granted
The feature will be available on the big screen via the company’s app for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung, Roku, LG, Sky, and Comcast.
The new feature allows users to share lyrics and destinations via a button at the bottom of the screen on mobile devices. The Lyrics experience is the same for Free and Premium customers, they say.
Real-time lyrics on music apps have a tumultuous past When music publishers don’t offer lyrics, companies turn to a third party. But they aren’t always fair. So Genius accused Google of plagiarising its lyrics collection in 2019 by brilliantly putting secret codes into its songs that spell out “red-handed”. These lyrics have later found on Google.com. But Google blamed their partner, LyricFind. It didn’t cancel its deal because significant lyrics deals tend to be with Genius, LyricFind, or Musixmatch (or a combination).
In 2018, Apple announced a relationship with Genius providing lyrics spanning hundreds of popular songs. And two years later became Genius’ exclusive web player. Pandora says it works with LyricFind, and Amazon says it works with LyricFind and Musixmatch.
Lyrics will now be available in all regions including Pakistan where Spotify is available, removing one of Spotify’s major competitive advantages.
Lyrics will be available globally starting today.
