Smuggled items worth over Rs 35bn seized in Jul-Jan

Smuggled items worth over Rs35 billion were seized during July-January 2020/2021 while, items worth RS22 billion seized during the corresponding period last year, data released by the Federal Revenue Council (FBR) showed.

FBR reported that it seized items whose value during the first seven months of the current fiscal year is almost equal to the goods that FBR seized over the previous year, which totaled RS 36 billion.

Moreover, FBR said it seized non-custom paid vehicles worth Rs 11.2 billion during the period from July to January.

However, Seized items include betel nuts worth Rs 3.4 billion, clothing Rs 1.9 billion, cigarettes Rs 553 million, electronic items worth Rs 380 million, diesel Rs899 million, and Rs 271 million in ornaments and jewelry.

Furthermore, FBR said the confiscation of smuggled betel nuts increased 105%, clothing 28pc, cigarettes 70pc, auto parts 113pc, electronic items 67pc, diesel 93pc and ornaments, and jewelry 104pc.

It also seized six million tonnes of iodine used in the production of drugs and sealed up to 2,000 illegal bombs.
