Sheikh Rasheed says TLP boss called for embassy closure

When he met with Saad Rizvi, the leader of the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed stated Rizvi remained firm on the TLP’s demand for the closing of the French embassy in Pakistan, according to the minister.

According to Rasheed, who was addressing to press today after attending a ceremony for Rescue 1122, he had persuaded Rizvi that the topic will be debated in the parliament.

“In this regard, I have signed a [agreement] to which I am committed,” the minister said, adding that he was not aware of any discussions that took place while he was away from the country.

According to Mufti Muneebur Rehman, the proscribed TLP had never demanded that the government expel the French ambassador, nor had they demanded that their country’s embassy be closed, as reported earlier this week. He also questioned allegations that these were the group’s primary demands.

Mufti Muneeb had stated during a news conference in Karachi that “the ministers lied […] the people who held negotiations with TLP lied about [the organisation] asking for the expulsion of the French ambassador, the closing of the embassy, and the severance of links with the European Union.”
