Shahid Khaqan Abbasi worries about delaying a new COAS

A top PML-N leader named Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was worried about the delay in appointing a new chief of army staff. He said that not giving the summary was a “constitutional infringement.”

The previous prime minister encouraged the authorities to send the report quickly so Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif could make a quick decision.

Abbasi: “Pakistan awaits the new army chief.”

He noted that including an unfit candidate for COAS in the summary would be inappropriate and might be contested in court.

The formal process for appointing a new army chief begins with the general headquarters providing the prime minister with a list of the senior-most generals.

In 24 hours, Khawaja Asif proposes a new COAS.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the next army head would be named in 24 hours.

Khawaja Asif told Geo News that the defence ministry will receive a list of top officers from GHQ tomorrow and will likely send a summary to the prime minister on the same day.

Khawaja Asif says General Headquarters nominates army chief candidates (GHQ).

The minister denied rumours of civil-military tension. The COAS respects Nawaz Sharif, he said.

The minister claimed he couldn’t comment on Imran Khan’s relationship with General Qamar Javed Bajwa. Imran Khan and Qamar Javed Bajwa should know.”
