Punjab LG election to be held on 15 May

Mian Mahmood-ur-Rasheed, the Punjab Minister for Local Government, confirmed on Wednesday that the Punjab LG election will take place on May 15.

The minister, speaking at a gathering hosted at Punjab University in Lahore, stated that through direct local govt elections, every individual would be able to choose his or her own representation in government.

No government has enabled local bodies to function properly in the past. “We’re trying to establish an independent local government system,” Rasheed explained.

The minister went on to say that while it is the members of the assembly’s role to legislate, they were also carrying out the responsibilities of the local body representatives.

“The members of the assembly must compete for finances and, on occasion, for the attention of the contractor.”

Rasheed went on to say that the primary responsibility of lawmakers was to handle people’s problems and pass legislation, but that they were now preoccupied with dealing with local government issues.
