Punjab has recorded 44 cases of dengue fever so far, the provincial health department said on Wednesday as authorities began taking immediate action to control the disease.
Authorities said 13 of the 44 dengue patients were from Lahore, three from Gujarat and Vehari, two from Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Kasur, while seven had traveled from another province and one from Islamabad.
To control the disease, the health department has ordered authorities to activate intensive care units in hospitals and employ 10,929 health workers on a contract basis.
The Ministry of Health announced that the weekly Sunday vacation for health workers involved in the campaign against dengue was cancelled.

The health ministry said 44 cases of dengue fever were recorded this year, compared with nine reported in the province at the end of May last year.
Dengue fever is transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, where irregular rainfall and a tropical climate are ideal breeding grounds.
