Punjab govt’s free electricity offer postponed by ECP until by-elections

In accordance with the ‘Roshan Gharana Program,’ the initiative taken by the Punjab provincial government to provide a subsidy on monthly electricity bills has been halted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The ‘Roshan Gharana Program’ has been put on hold till July 17 by the ECP meeting, which was presided over by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja. The meeting also directed that the program might be re-launched after the elections.

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEC) expressed their desire for these elections to be conducted in an open and honest way, citing the fact that the results will have a direct bearing on the establishment of the province administration.

During the course of the hearing, Hamza Shahbaz stated that the program to subsidize homes that get electricity bills of up to one hundred units was initiated in the budget for the province government for the fiscal year 2022-23. “This program is for the entire province and is not confined to 20 constituencies,” he stated. “This package is for the entire province.”

According to the counsel for the chief minister, a violation of the code of conduct can only be determined to have occurred in the event that a package is being announced for a specific seat.

In response to this, the chief election commissioner questioned whether or not the program was included in the budget, and if it was, then questioned why it was necessary to announce it later through a press conference.
