LAHORE: In a breakthrough, Lahore Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) police finally arrested Abid Malhi, the prime suspect in the gang-rap case on the Manga Mandi Lahore-Sialkot highway, about 20 miles from here.

The arrest came after police, as a strategy, released Malhi’s parents, brothers, and wife, allowing them to use the SIM cards on their old cell phones to capture him.

Punjab’s Deputy Inspector General of Operations (DIG) Sohail Sukhera, speaking with Dawn, confirmed Malhi’s arrest and said the police strategy to release his family members was successful when the suspect contacted his mother by phone.

He said special police teams who were on the alert followed Malhi’s call. He said that appellant was in Faisalabad, where the suspect was in hiding.

The DIG said during the conversation that Malhi’s mother told him that she and other members of her family had been released by the police. At this, Malhi expressed his wish to meet her at Manga Mandi, Sukhera said, adding that the suspect had arrived at his mother’s house according to his plan.

Sukhera said that as soon as Malhi entered the house, police teams, who had previously been deployed there, raided the property and arrested the suspect without encountering resistance.

He said the other suspect, Shafqat, whose arrest had been announced by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Usman Buzdar, had already been remanded to prison. 14 days by a court. Terrorist (ATC) in Lahore.

The sources said the suspects’ DNA tests had already been conducted three times and the results matched the rape victim’s samples. However, they said the test would be rerun before moving forward with the case.

They fired warning shots into the air and found the terrified woman crying in the nearby jungle. The two suspects fled the scene after hearing the gunshots.

Later, the survivor’s DNA samples were reportedly sent to the Punjab Forensic Sciences Agency lab, confirming the involvement of the two die-hard criminals – Shafqat Ali and Abid Malhi in the gang rape.

An FIR of the incident was filed with the Gujjarpura Police Department under various articles of Pakistan’s Penal Code and Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
