Prime Minister Imran Khan decided on Tuesday that the government will guarantee the abundant availability of wheat and sugar in the country, with the aim of completely suppressing the elements involved in hoarding these goods.
The prime minister chaired a meeting to review wheat and sugar supplies, availability, supply and demand, imports to meet future needs and prices of basic life products, the media wing of the prime minister’s office said in a press release.
The meeting was attended by Industry Minister Muhammad Hammad Azhar, National Food Security Minister Syed Fakhar Imam, advisers to Prime Minister Abdul Razak Dawood and Ishrat Hussain, Special Assistants to the Prime Minister, Lieutenant General (at retirement) Asim Salim Bajwa and Dr. Shahbaz Gill, relevant secretaries and other senior officials. The provincial secretaries attended the meeting via video link.
The Prime Minister received a detailed report on the current situation of stocks and imports of wheat and sugar. He was also informed about the prices of current products.
The prime minister has instructed provincial governments to further increase the supply of wheat to guarantee sufficient availability on the market. He also ordered the presentation of a detailed list of imported wheat. He instructed the chief provincial secretaries to ensure the physical viability of the current sugar supply in the mills.
The Punjab Chief Secretary has also been ordered to announce the date of the crushing of the sugar cane as soon as possible. The top secretaries of Punjab and Sindh have been ordered to announce the official price of sugar cane as soon as possible.
