Prime Minister Imran Khan has called on developed countries around the world to adhere to the Paris Agreement on climate change, stating that it is critical for them to achieve their climate ambitions, both in terms of emissions reduction and increased financial flows to developing countries. Imran Khan also called on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be implemented.
The prime minister voiced concern about the failure of rich countries to meet their climate funding commitments. He proposed that efforts such as debt-for-nature swaps will free up fiscal headroom in underdeveloped countries, allowing them to take more aggressive climate-change measures.
The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, was called by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the Secretary General of the United Nations. Twenty-five heads of state and government were invited to the informal gathering of world leaders in Washington, D.C.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke at the event, highlighting the country’s significant susceptibility to climate change and stating that mitigating its consequences was a top priority for his administration.
In this context, he briefed the leaders on the most important national efforts, such as the success of the flagship 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Project and the achievement of the clean energy goal of 60% by 2030.
