Mobile phone usage while driving has now been added to the list of severe traffic offences by the traffic police, following prolonged deliberation in both the ministries of law and interior and adoption of new legislation.
According to the government, drivers who text, talk on the phone, or film videos while driving would be fined Rs1,000, automobile drivers Rs1,500, and public transportation drivers Rs2,000.
“We are currently awaiting approval of the new proposed fines by the Cabinet Division,” said the spokesperson. For the time being, the use of mobile phones is classified as a “other miscellaneous offence,” according to Sarfraz Virk, superintendent of Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP).
Since January, 53 accidents involving vehicles colliding with motorcyclists have been registered, with 43 of them resulting in fatalities, according to ITP data. Vehicles have collided with or struck pedestrians in a total of 21 incidents, 15 of which resulted in fatalities, and 30 collisions between vehicles, eleven of which resulted fatalities. At this point, it is not known how many unregistered cases there are.
