The next chief of army staff will be announced on November 26 before General Qamar Javed Bajwa retires on November 29.
Asif’s announcement comes hours after he told the National Assembly that his ministry informed the General Headquarters (GHQ) about the new army chief’s appointment.
The process takes 2–3 days. “We’ll deal with Imran Khan after the frenzy dies down,” he remarked.
The minister added on Geo News’ “Capital Talk” that the appointment process for the Pakistan Army’s highest offices has begun.
“In a letter to the Defense Ministry, the Prime Minister requested the future army chief’s name and dossier.” The ministry instructed GHQ to send dossiers with nominees.
In Pakistan, unlike any other country, the appointment of the army chief causes public panic.
“Once the situation is settled, political leaders should join hands, sit down, and talk so the nomination isn’t politicized in the future,” he said.
When asked why PTI Chairman Imran Khan chose November 26 for the lengthy march, the defense minister said the former premier may suspect President Dr. Arif Alvi won’t approve PM Shehbaz’s recommendation for a high-ranking Pakistan Army post.
“Imran Khan cleared the US of a foreign plot.” He maintained that the establishment didn’t plot against him. Asif remarked, “He still believes the establishment could have prevented the coup.”
The defense minister said Khan legitimized the no-confidence vote by abandoning the US and the establishment.
He stated that the PTI chief sold Toshakhana gifts. “You receive a gift. He said Khan sells his honor.
Whether Khan’s helicopter lands in Islamabad will be up to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.
