NEPRA fined GEPCO Rs. 21 million

The NEPRA fined Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) Rs. 21 million for negligence resulting in tragic accidents from July 2019 to May 2021.

The NEPRA established a two-member inquiry committee under Section 27A of the NEPRA Act 1997 to visit the relevant locations, conduct investigations, and ascertain the facts and suspected violations of NEPRA Laws, Rules, and Regulations According to ProPakistani.

The investigative committee found that GEPCO was negligent in eight of the thirteen fatalities. One GEPCO employee and seven members of the public died.

So, the Authority served GEPCO with a show-cause notice under Section 27B of the NEPRA Act, 1997, and gave it an opportunity to respond. Based on the evidence, GEPCO’s comments, and relevant laws, rules, and regulations, the Authority found that GEPCO had failed to meet its statutory obligations to maintain safety standards.

So the Authority fined GEPCO Rs. 21 million. The Authority further noted that while GEPCO compensated the family of an employee who died in an electrocution accident, no compensation was granted to the families of seven other victims.

The Authority has authorised GEPCO to pay the general public in an amount equal to the sum granted to the deceased employee’s family. The Authority also ordered GEPCO to hire the surviving relatives of each deceased family.
