Microsoft supports AMD’s DLSS response on Xbox consoles

AMD's FSR is in Xbox preview today

Microsoft is enabling Xbox developers to leverage AMD’s response to Nvidia’s DLSS in console games. FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) recently appeared on Windows computers to increase frame rates and maintain image quality. This is AMD’s reaction to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), and early testing has shown that it is a promising technology that will work across a wide range of games and platforms.

FSR is now heading to Xbox games. Microsoft today started visualizing FSR support in game development kits for Windows and Xbox. “It’s supported on Windows, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One consoles,” said Jason Ronald. Jason Ronald is a Microsoft director for Xbox Program Management. “FSR is designed to allow developers to achieve higher frame rates and resolutions with minimal effort for developers on consoles and computers.”

However, we expect to see this once Xbox games can be fully certified with FSR support. It’s likely to stay that way for a few months, so we’ll see FSR in Xbox games later this year or even early 2022.

Microsoft Xbox with FSR support coming soon

However, it’s great to see Xbox with FSR support coming soon. We reached out to AMD to clarify when this would be coming for the PS5, but AMD has yet to comment on that. Given the widespread support for AMD and Nvidia GPUs on PCs, we expect FSR to appear in full on the PS5 at some point.

The Sony PS5 doesn’t currently have VRR or 1440p PS5 support, and the long-awaited M.2 SSD slot isn’t enabled yet. So FSR support might be on Sony’s to-do list. Sony is opening a beta program for the PS5 before the next big system update. So we’ll hear more soon about support for FSR or other features missing on the PS5.
