In September, Microsoft Stopping Office Support on Chromebooks

The Microsoft Office Productivity Package has used by many people, both students and people who work in offices. The software has eventually extended to mobile platforms such as iOS and Android, allowing Chromebooks to utilize it as well. It’s surprising news that the Microsoft is stopping it’s office support on Chromebooks from September.

It was far from a perfect experience, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to learn that Microsoft has confirmed to about Chromebooks that Chromebook support for its Office apps will be stopping in September. According to a Microsoft spokesperson:

For Chrome OS/Chromebook users, Microsoft Office and Outlook will be moved on September 18, 2021 to the web-based experience (Office.com and Outlook.com). This change brings Chrome OS / Chromebooks – Customers have access to additional and premium features. Customers must sign in with their personal Microsoft account or the account linked to their Microsoft 365 subscription. For more information, see here.”

With that in mind, it doesn’t mean Chromebook users can no longer use Office. If they want to use Office, they need access to web applications. This would be similar to using Google Docs or Google Spreadsheets online. Of course, local apps would be much preferable, but if Microsoft changes its mind, Chromebook users won’t have much choice.
