Punjab budget: Govt and opposition are at odds on conditions

Prior to the presentation of the budget for the financial year 2022-2023 for the province of Punjab, the administration and the opposition were headed toward a stalemate over ‘conditions.’

The Punjab government and the opposition have been unable to come to an agreement, which has caused the publication of the budget for the fiscal year 2022-2023 to be delayed. A meeting of the business advisory committee was held in the Punjab Assembly just before the session on the budget for the province of Punjab.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded that the government drop all charges against its leaders and activists. In addition, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has requested that the Inspector General of the Punjab police apologize to the advisory committee. Additionally, the opposition party put out the demand that all charges be dropped against the employees of the Punjab Assembly.

The Chief Minister’s Office has decided not to accept the criteria that were proposed by the opposition. They went on to say that new conditions had been imposed by the government team after holding discussions with the Chief Minister of Punjab, Hamza Shahbaz.

The government of Punjab has taken the stance that the cases against the provincial lawmakers will be investigated in-depth in order to ascertain the facts regarding the scuffle that occurred in the Punjab Assembly during the election of the CM. This position was taken after the government of Punjab adopted the stance. The team representing the administration stated that no agreement will be signed unless an investigation into the MPs is conducted first.

According to some sources, there is a stalemate between the government and the opposition as a result of the rejection of the criteria by both parties, which resulted in a delay in the budget for the provincial government. Before the event that the opposition and the administration were unable to reach an agreement, the budget would not be tabled in the Punjab Assembly.

On the other hand, PA Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and the opposition leader Sibtain Khan presided over the parliamentary party session. During this session, Pervaiz Elahi stated that they informed the government of their demands and that the IG Punjab will have to tender an apology; otherwise, the proceedings of the assembly will not be continued. Sibtain Khan is the leader of the opposition.

Sibtain Khan was quoted as saying that they will not allow the procedures of the assembly to continue unless their demands are accepted.
