Airport authorities seize banned chocolates and other items from passengers

Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, authorities seized chocolates and candy. The development sparked controversy about whether the import ban enacted last week applies to tourists’ personal possessions.

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail tweeted on Tuesday that the government has enhanced airport surveillance amid fears that banning imports will promote smuggling of non-essential commodities.

We believe smuggling will expand if the government bans non-essential commodities. We’ve cracked down on professional khaipyas. Ordinary folks bringing in a few products won’t be hounded, he said.

Food was seized for “violating customs/ITC/foreign exchange/allied laws.”

The authorities said the decision is in accordance with the government’s announcement last week that it will bar the import of non-essential luxury commodities to help the country out of its financial crisis.
