Following Punjab Assembly speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi refusal to take the oath of office as acting governor, a constitutional crisis has emerged in Pakistan’s most populous province.
It has been reported that, following Sarfraz Cheema’s dismissal from office, the federal government issued a notification designating the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly as acting governor. However, Pervez Elahi has denied to take the job of acting governor.
According to sources within the PML-Q, Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema was removed from office in an unconstitutional way.
Pervaiz Elahi, according to sources, is opposed to taking the oath because if Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is appointed as acting governor, Dost Mazari would be appointed as acting speaker of the Punjab Assembly and the Punjab cabinet will be required to take the oath.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, on the other hand, was observed busy executing his official duties in the Punjab Assembly Secretariat, where he was speaking with his colleagues about the current state of affairs.
In a late-night decision, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-led federal cabinet denotified Omar Sarfraz of his position as governor of Punjab.
A notification released by the Cabinet Division stated that Omar Sarfraz had been removed from his position as governor and that Punjab Assembly speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi will take over as acting governor.
