The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly of Punjab, Dost Muhammad Mazari, was attacked with ‘lotas’ by members of the treasury as the House is about to elect the Chief Minister of Punjab with Hamza Shehbaz and Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in the running.
The deputy speaker was escorted out of the provincial assembly premises by members of the police force and assembly security.
Meanwhile, Punjab Assembly Speaker Parvez Elahi expressed his displeasure with the presence of police officers in the house and accused the IG Punjab of the incident. “This has never happened before in the history of the country.”
Specifically, he urged that the Inspector General be called and placed in jail for one month.
This afternoon, the Punjab Assembly will convene in order to pick a new chief minister for the state. PML-Q leader Chaudhry Parvez Elahi and PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz are both vying for the position.
As a result of their plan to vote for Hamza Shehbaz, the estranged members of the PTI are expected to face significant pushback during the session, which will be presided over by Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari. According to insiders, the session could turn violent.
As a result, “the PTI has decided to withdraw from the Punjab Assembly in the event that its candidate, Parvez Elahi, is defeated in the election,” the party stated, adding that “Imran Khan has also spoken to party leaders in Punjab as well as coalition partners in this regard.”
Furthermore, Dost Muhammad Mazari, the Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, stated today in a press conference that the court has ordered him to hold free and fair elections in Punjab.
“I intend to hold free and fair elections, and I have granted permission for the media to cover the events in order to increase transparency,” he stated.
He was concerned that the two sides would create an atmosphere conducive to adjourning the session; nonetheless, he would guarantee that the processes proceeded smoothly and that the results were announced as soon as they were available.
He further stated that he had no knowledge of any meeting with Hamza Shehbaz and that if someone has proof of such a meeting, they should contact him.
