Tough competition between Hamza and Elahi expected for the Punjab CM seat

A tight race for the position of chief minister (CM) in the Punjab Assembly is expected today between Hamza Shehbaz, the joint opposition’s nominee, and Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, a government ally, for the position of the chief minister.

Following a compromise between the ruling PTI and the opposition PML-Q a few days ago, Sardar Usman Buzdar resigned from his position, leaving the prestigious position empty.

Both candidates must receive at least 186 votes in the House of 371 in order to win the election for the position of Chief Minister of Punjab.

With 371 members of Parliament, the PML-N appears to be on the verge of recovering control of Punjab, which is lost in the previous year.

The Opposition claims that its combined strength, which includes its own 160 MPAs (the total strength of the PML-N is 165, of which five MPAs are siding with the government), seven MPAs of the PPP, and the remainder from the rebel groups of the PTI headed by Jehangir Khan Tareen (JKT) and Abdul Aleem Khan, as well as four out of five independents, exceeds 188.

On the other hand, the candidate for the ruling coalition has used his expertise and influence to secure the support of JKT group MPAs, and openly, MPA Rafaqat Gilani, who is a member of the JKT group, has stated that he is “siding with Imran and cannot abandon him at this critical time.”

Rafaqat alleges that around five to six MPAs from the JKT group, all of whom are PTI MPAs, will vote for Parvez Elahi in the upcoming election. Rafaqat Gilani had arrived in PA with Chaudhry Moonis Elahi, the son of Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, who had accompanied him. On the other hand, Malik Nauman Langrial, Saeed Niwani, Tahir Randhawa, and a slew of other PTI members of parliament have publicly stated that they will back Hamza in the CM Punjab race. Malik Nauman Langrial also appeared alongside Hamza in a news conference during which he expressed his support for the PMLN.

Previous to that, the nomination papers of Parvez Elahi and Hamza Shehbaz had been accepted for consideration. The voting will take place today, and the session of the PA will be presided over by Deputy Speaker Mir Dost Muhammad Mazari. Despite a nearly three-hour delay, the PA session on Saturday got underway and continued for a short length of time, during which the timetable for the poll and procedure was announced. In spite of this, political activity continued in the PA, with top officials such as Rana Sana Ullah Khan, Chaudhry Moonis Elahi, Atta Ullah Tarar, and Raja Basharat being spotted in the PA Secretariat.

Parvez Elahi, speaking during a joint parliamentary gathering of the PTI and the PMLQ, predicted that the first Ramazan would deliver the good news of triumph to the people of Pakistan and the world. According to him, “we are one team, and we will continue as such.”

On the occasion, Punjab’s Acting Chief Minister, Sardar Usman Buzdar, declared that Elahi would be successful if everyone worked together and that his triumph represented the victory of the entire coalition.

As a result of the Jahangir Tareen and Aleem Khan factions expressing support for Hamza Shehbaz in the Punjab Assembly, the PMLN announced the formation of a new administration in the province.

The announcement was made by Hamza Shehbaz, the leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly. He stated that his party, the PPP, and the Tareen group, as well as independent lawmakers, would form a government in Punjab in the near future. “Over the course of the last four years, people have been duped. People are suffering from hunger in their homes today, and the PMLN will put a stop to their suffering,” he said.
