Jahangir Khan Tareen group formally stated that it will back the joint Opposition’s candidate, PML-N leader Hamza Shahbaz, for Punjab’s chief minister position.
Malik Nauman Langriyal, a senior leader of the Jahangir Tareen group, made the official announcement at a joint press conference, adding that Hamza will serve the people of the province in his capacity as governor.
He went on to say that all of the decisions have been made by Jahangir Tareen, the estranged PTI leader and that all of the members of his group have agreed with the decision.
Speaking at the event, Hamza promised that if the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan passes tomorrow, he will “surprise the masses.”
The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly has scheduled a special session for tomorrow at 3 p.m. to elect a new chief minister.
An earlier meeting between former finance minister Ishaq Dar and former PTI secretary general Jahangir Tareen at a hotel in London had given rise to speculation about this eventuality. Senior PML-N leader Ishaq Dar had hinted at the possibility of such a development.
Both parties addressed the approaching no-confidence vote on Sunday as well as the election of the chief minister of Punjab, according to sources.
In addition, it was alleged two days before that Dar and Tareen had communicated by the phone. Sources close to Dar and Tareen have confirmed the existence of the telephonic call. According to others who were present at the meeting, the two leaders discussed prospective avenues for cooperation between Punjab and the federal government.
Ishaq Dar, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), rushed to Twitter to announce the major political news and express gratitude to Tareen for announcing his support for Hamza Shahbaz.
“I had a fruitful final round of talk with Mr. Jehangir Khan Tareen, and I am grateful for his time.” It has been mutually agreed that the #JKT Group will back the joint Opposition’s candidate for the position of Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr. Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.
Meanwhile, Tareen group spokesperson Aun Chaudhry has stated that the organization’s 16 members of Parliament will support the candidate of the unified opposition.
According to sources, Hamza Shahbaz will meet with the PTI’s unhappy lawmakers today and will provide them with all of the assurances they require.
