Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has called for a special session of the assembly to be held on April 2 (tomorrow), with the election of a new chief minister (CM) being among the items on the agenda.
The first session of the provincial legislature will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Sources have stated that Usman Buzdar’s resignation as chief minister has not yet been accepted and that the resignation is likely to be postponed until after the National Assembly votes on the no-trust motion.
On March 28, the Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q) agreed to back Prime Minister Imran Khan in the National Assembly (NA) no-confidence vote, following the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar from his position.
PML-Q and Prime Minister Imran had reached an agreement before the vote on the no-confidence motion, which will be discussed starting on March 31, and as a result, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Amarinder Singh had resigned.
In exchange, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) pledged to back Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who was running for the position of chief minister of the Punjab province.
