On Saturday, police announced that they had arrested the main suspect in the high-profile murder of journalist Athar Mateen. This was a significant breakthrough.
The suspect, identified only as Ashraf, was arrested during a raid conducted near the Sindh-Balochistan border Friday night, according to the police. According to the authorities, the arrest was conducted with the help of advanced technology and intelligence agencies.
Announcing the arrest of a suspect in the journalist’s murder on Twitter, Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani announced that a man believed to be involved in the murder had been arrested by the Sindh police.
“InshAllah, the murderer will be brought to justice in accordance with the law,” he promised, praising the police for their efforts to identify and arrest the murderers.
In connection with the murder investigation, a number of persons have already been put into custody on suspicion of involvement.
A vehicle in Karachi’s Nazimabad district was targeted by unidentified armed men on February 18, killing Athar Mateen as he attempted to prevent a carjacking attempt. The attackers were not identified. Mateen works as a news producer for a privately owned television station.
