In response to “an unprovoked and illegal attack by Russian military troops” on Ukraine, U.S. President Joe Biden stated that the United States and its allies would respond to Russia in a “uniformed and strong manner.”
Mr. Biden said in a statement released late on Wednesday that “President (Vladimir) Putin has chosen a planned conflict that will result in a catastrophic loss of life and human misery.”
“Russia alone bears responsibility for the death and devastation that will result from this attack. Russia will be held accountable by the rest of the world.”
Biden stated that he would announce additional sanctions against Russia, which would be imposed by the United States and its partners. Biden is scheduled to speak in the early afternoon, according to the White House.
In the hours following Biden’s statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on state television that he had authorized a military operation in eastern Ukraine, and explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and the breakaway eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, according to local media.
He said he will keep an eye on the situation from the White House before holding a virtual meeting with his counterparts from the Group of Seven advanced countries in the early hours of Thursday morning.
“I will address the American people to announce the further repercussions that the United States, our allies, and partners will impose on Russia as a result of this reckless act of aggression against Ukraine and world peace and security,” he stated.
Moreover, Biden stated that the United States would work with NATO allies “to assure a robust, united reaction that deters any assault against the alliance.”
