Plans are ongoing to rename the Duke of York’s famous horse race

York Racesourse is planning to rename the Duke of York’s famous horse race to ‘better reflect’ the royal. Originally George V subsequently became king and the race has renamed after him in August 1895.

Duke of York Prince Andrew is facing charges of sexual assault, which he has denied time and time again. Whereas, resigned from royal responsibilities included his sponsorship of York Racecourse in 2019 due to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Every May, the first day of York Racecourse’s Dante Festival features the Duke of York Stakes. The famous horse race had evolved into a prestige sprint contest.

According to a statement, “it has filed for a change in the race’s name to The 1895 Duke of York Stakes to better represent its lengthy history. Moreover, the individuals will also remember Duke of York but official approval of a name change has necessary.

When Prince Andrew married in 1986, he received the traditional title of Duke of York. Several politicians in York asked on the prince to “stop his association” with the city by either losing or ceasing to use the title.

York’s head of marketing and sponsorship told the media that the it had become a distraction in the current news cycle.
