SSGC Suggests ‘New’ Plan to Deal with Karachi Gas Shortage

Imran Maniyar, Managing Director of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), stated that the company had designed a new strategy to fix the ongoing gas shortage in Karachi, which would begin on December 27.

In a video message, he promised that the new plan will boost gas pressure in Karachi starting Monday, but that it would only fix half of the city’s gas problem.

“We cannot give gas to everyone during the winter,” Maniyar said in a statement. “As a result, industries will not receive gas supply for one and a half days beginning Monday.”

“Everyone will be at a loss if the industries accept stay orders from the courts.”
The SSGC MD stated, “Taking stay orders from courts hinders the affairs, which in turn hurts the public.”

He stated that SSGC was facing a 200mmfcd shortfall in December and a 250mmfcd deficiency in January. He claimed that during the winter season, gas demand in Quetta surged from 70 to 200 mmfcd.

As the opposition questions the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) administration over the country’s gas shortages, Energy Minister Hammad Azhar said on Friday that attempts were being made to boost gas supply.

He had said at a news conference in the federal capital that the Sui Southern and Northern Gas companies were putting in “all-out efforts” to ensure “good management” of gas supply to domestic consumers, despite constraints such as natural gas reserve depletion and increased demand during the winter months.
