PM Imran Khan Appreciates Putin’s Comments On Blasphemy and Islamophobia

Prime Minister Imran Khan has appreciated Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement that blasphemy is not a kind of freedom of expression.

PM Imran Khan said on Twitter, “I welcome President Putin’s statement which reaffirms my message that insulting our Holy Prophet PBUH is not ” freedom of expression”.

“We Muslims, especially Muslim leaders, must communicate this message to non-Muslim world leaders to resist Islamophobia,” he continued.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated during his annual news conference on Thursday that Blasphemy or insulting Prophet Muhammad is not freedom of speech.

Such insults, he said, are a “breach of religious freedom as well as a violation of the sacred sensibilities of Muslims.”

PM Imran Khan had earlier in May called on the Muslim community to devise a coordinated approach to combat rising Islamophobia.

He urged the international community to work together for interfaith tolerance and peaceful coexistence while speaking with the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen.

The prime minister had emphasized the significance of a coordinated reaction from the OIC, citing the growth of Islamophobic acts in many regions of the world.

Following the prime minister’s letter to Muslim country heads of state, the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) in Niamey unanimously endorsed a resolution declaring March 15 as International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
