Punjab Govt declares a smog disaster

On Sunday, Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Bazdar announced that smog had been designated a natural calamity in order to preserve human lives in the province’s capital.

As stated in his statement, Usman Bazdar stated that the deputy commissioners had been given the authority they required to supervise the smog-control measures being implemented.

He stated that a rigorous prohibition on the burning of tires in workplaces should be in place and that a prohibition on the burning of crop leftovers should be vigorously enforced.

Usman Bazdar stated that the environment department, administration, and other relevant agencies should ensure that the plan developed to deal with the smog situation is implemented and that legal action should be taken against the industries, vehicles, and brick kilns that are involved in the spread of pollution.

Dr. Shahbaz Gill, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication, has criticized previous governments for pollution in Sahiwal on November 20, according to a press release.

The advisor had stated that “they erected a coal power plant in the lush green agricultural terrain of Sahiwal, which has resulted in the city being listed as one of the most polluted areas in the country,” without mentioning a political party.

After Prime Minister Imran Khan launched the tree-planting program in 2013, he claimed that members of the opposition used to make fun of it.

“Dangerous air pollution has resulted in respiratory and lung diseases among residents,” he had said, citing a report that claimed Sahiwal, with a pollution index of 394, was the most polluted city in Pakistan, followed by Lahore and Bahawalpur on the list of the ten most polluted cities in the country.
