Babar Azam tops ICC T20 batting rankings

According to the current International Cricket Council Men’s Twenty20 International Player Rankings, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has surpassed England’s Dawid Malan to become the world’s best T20I batsman.

Babar is now the top-ranked T20I batsman in the world, with 834 points, followed by Milan, who has 798 points and is ranked second.

Two successive half-centuries in the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup 2021 have helped the batsman leapfrog Malan and take over the top spot in the batting rankings.

After scoring 51 points against Afghanistan and 70 points against Namibia to help the 2009 champions advance to the semifinals, Babar has risen to the top of the rankings for the sixth time in his career. On January 28, 2018, the 27-year-old became the first person to hold the top spot. In addition, he is now ranked first in one-day internationals.

Babar’s rating points total of 834 keeps him 36 points ahead of Dawid Malan, while his career high of 896 rating points, obtained after scoring 65 against England at Cardiff on May 5, 2019, remains his career high. Malan had been at the top of the rankings since November 29 of the previous year.

The performances of England’s players in the competition are also reflected in the rankings, with both Jos Buttler and Jason Roy moving up in the most recent weekly update to reflect their success.

In the wake of scoring his maiden Twenty20 International century against Sri Lanka, Buttler has climbed eight spots to ninth rank, a career-high for him, while Roy has climbed five spots to 14th.

It’s been a good run for Wanindu Hasanaga of Sri Lanka with his two three-wicket hauls in a row against South Africa and England in the last few of weeks. Until now, Tabraiz Shamsi of South Africa had held the top spot in the standings, which he has held since April 10 of this year.

The top four bowlers in the rankings are all wrist spinners, with England’s Adil Rashid surpassing Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan to take third place with a career-high 730 rating points, surpassing Rashid Khan’s previous record of 730 points set in 2012. Anrich Nortje of South Africa is a fast bowler who has risen through the ranks in a short period of time, climbing 18 spots to take over seventh place.

Mohammad Nabi has caught up with Shakib Al Hasan at the top of the all-rounders’ rankings, collecting 271 rating points to Shakib’s 270. Hasaranga comes in at number four on this list.
