Russian Hackers Targeting Hundreds of US SolarWinds Microsoft says

Microsoft says that Russian hackers targeting hundreds of US solarwinds in the country with the latest wave of the cyber attack. The Russian-based group responsible for last year’s catastrophic solarwinds hack has targeted hundreds more firms and organizations in its new wave of attacks on computer systems in the United States, according to a blog post published by Microsoft.

According to a blog post published on October 24 by Microsoft, Nobelium’s latest wave of malware targeted “resellers and other technological service providers” of cloud computing services. Microsoft claimed the assaults were part of a larger effort that began earlier this summer and ended on October 19. The company said it had told 609 customers between July 1 and October 19 that they had been targeted.

Microsoft said the New York Times, which was the first to expose the breach, that just a small percentage of the most recent efforts were successful, but it provided no other specifics.

Officials from the United States’ cybersecurity agency were unable to quickly validate the allegation.

A senior administration official, who did not want to be identified, described the operation as “unsophisticated, run-of-the-mill operations that could have been avoided if the cloud service providers had implemented baseline cybersecurity practises.” The Times reported that the operation was underway.

As Microsoft explained, “this recent activity is yet another indication that Russia is attempting to gain long-term, systematic access to a variety of points in the technology supply chain and establish a mechanism for surveillance of targets of interest to the Russian government – either now or in the future.”
