As you may know, YouTube has a subscription tier called YouTube Premium. But the company seems to be experimenting with the idea of a cheaper option called Premium Lite. This is evident from a post made by jelmerjt users on ResetEra where they came across the option when they tried to cancel their premium subscription.
According to the publication, “This is quite interesting. Now that I’ve tried to unsubscribe from YouTube Premium, Google has informed me that there is a free version available. It costs €6.99 per month (instead of €11.99 for Premium) and only offers you a YouTube-free experience. So you don’t get any other premium features.”
Basically, you only pay for ad removal, while a premium subscription gives you ad-free viewing, as well as seamless music listening on YouTube Music, background playback, and offline downloads. I have to say that even with the price, it still feels a little pricey just to remove the ads.
Anyway, it looks like this is a test at the moment and limited to certain parts of the world. But we’re assuming that YouTube will have to expand the program at some point to cover more markets if all goes well. So keep an eye out for when so that’s something you might be interested in.
