Reverse vending machine set up in Islamabad to recycle plastics

The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam, set up the first reverse vending machine (RVM) of its kind to recycle plastics at Jinnah Supermarket, Islamabad.

Mr. Malik Amin Aslam commented: “We will all have to work together to address the issue of plastic. The RVM machine is a way to contact the public and encourage them to recycle”.

As the use of plastic has increased, it is the main reason for air and water pollution. Therefore, it is a basic need to recycle plastic in the right way.

Packaging waste is an urgent global problem. Although plastic is a lightweight and very useful for packing material that helps keep food safe, affordable, and affordable, only 14% of what is used is effectively recycled. This will require fundamental changes in how packaging is made and disposed of and rethinking its forms and functions.

The machine is convenient for people to recycle plastic. Any kind of plastic bottle can be used on the machine.

The consumer only needs to press the start button on a touch screen and the RVM will open a slot to receive the plastic bottle. Once deposited, RVM compresses the bottle so that it is ready for the next recycling steps.

RVM is part of the government’s policy and intention to take significant steps to address the issue of plastic waste and repaired it by a PepsiCo company.

Earlier this year, PepsiCo announced the country’s largest plastics collection and recycling project is going to start.

PepsiCo Pakistan will increase its 4,750-ton plastics collection program by adding another 5,500 tonnes, totaling 10,250 tonnes of plastics to be collected and recycled in 2021.

PepsiCo partner Green Earth Recycling implemented this program and its progress is being monitored by WWF -Pakistan.

Mr. Furqan Ahmed Syed, CEO of PepsiCo Pakistan and Afghanistan commented that “RVM is part of our multifaceted strategy to invest to increase recycling rates in major markets through campaigns that encourage consumers to recycle and partnerships to increase and improve the entire recycling infrastructure”.

We already launched a 4,750-tons plastic collection program earlier this year. Today we are more than doubling that goal and increasing the total collection to 10,250 tons.
