Over the weekend, country-pop star Kelsea Ballerini made her debut on “Saturday Night Live,” solidifying her place on late-night television. Ballerini performed two songs from her recent EP, “Rolling Up The Welcome Mat,” which was released unexpectedly last month after her divorce from fellow musician Morgan Evans.
For her performance, Ballerini wore all white and gave a powerful rendition of “Penthouse,” accompanying herself on the piano. The song is a standout track from her latest EP, and the lyrics touched on her post-divorce feelings. Ballerini sang, “Kissed someone new last night/ But now I don’t know where you’re sleeping, baby/ We got along real nice, until I wanted out, now I know you hate me.”
In addition to “Penthouse,” Ballerini also performed “Blindsided” on the show. The song is a pop-infused track from her “Welcome Mat” project, and during her performance, Ballerini added a new line that appeared to call out her ex-husband’s recent breakup single. She sang, “Now you’re singin’ it loud on the radio like you’re the only heart that breaks/ You would’ve searched the whole world over? Yeah, sure, OK.”
Ballerini’s performance on “Saturday Night Live” was not the only debut of the night. She was joined by Kansas City Chiefs tight-end Travis Kelce, who made his hosting debut on the show. Despite Kelce’s impressive Super Bowl wins, it was Ballerini who stole the show with her powerful performances and emotive lyrics.
