Karachi Traffic Police employed women officials in specific districts for the first time in the history of the city.
In a country where women still struggle to get a motorcycle license, this is a landmark move.
According to traffic police personnel in the Sharah-e-Faisal and Clifton neighborhoods of the city, a total of four women policemen were initially deployed.
According to the article, all four motorcyclists are trained. Their task is to monitor motorcyclists’ traffic and to raise awareness. They should also help those with damaged automobiles and call for further support if necessary.
However, officials of traffic police stated that they have still not been granted the power to file traffic infringement tickets (challans) or to prosecute anyone for disobedience to traffic rules.
Karachi Traffic Police officials have claimed that this is an effort to mobilize women to become part of their squad and that further women would be employed in the future.
