Italy Data authority Questions Facebook for Clarifications on Smart Glasses

According to the Italian data protection authority, it has requested clarifications from Facebook over the social media giant’s recently introduced smart glasses in order to determine if the product complies with privacy regulations.

With the use of a companion app, Facebook smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica, enable wearers to listen to music while also making calls or taking images and short films, which they can then share across Facebook’s services.

In a statement, the Italian data protection authority stated that it has requested clarifications from Facebook through the Irish data protection commissioner, who oversees the social media corporation because its European headquarters are located in Ireland.

The Italian authorities stated that they wanted to be told about the safeguards put in situ by Facebook to guard those that are occasionally filmed, particularly children, also as about the systems in situ to form data collected anonymous and therefore the features of the voice assistant that’s connected to the glasses, consistent with the statement.

As a result, prior to the launch of Ray-Ban Stories, the company engaged with the Irish Data Protection Commission to explain how it has built privacy into the product design and functionality of its glasses to provide both device owners and those around them with peace of mind. “We know people have questions on new technologies, so before the launch of Ray-Ban Stories, we engaged with Irish Data Protection Commission to share how we’ve built privacy into the product design and functionality of its glasses to give both device owners and those around them peace of mind”.

In addition, the representative stated that “we will respond to Garante’s questions through the Irish DPC and that we look forward to our continued work with regulators in Europe.”
