India reports biggest increase in COVID-19 in three weeks

India reports biggest increase in Covid-19 infections in three weeks with 13,193 cases. While thousands of marshal swelled to wear masks in the financial capital Mumbai which is facing a recent rise.

The number of confirmed infections is 10.96 million, second only to the US with more than 156,000 deaths. However, the actual infections could be as high as 300 million, a government serological study showed earlier this month.

In recent days, 75% of new cases in India reports increase from the southern states of Kerala and Maharashtra, home to Mumbai, a densely populated city of 20 million people. Both states already have the most infections registered.

Health experts suggest that reopening educational facilities in Kerala and resuming suburban rail services in Mumbai could be key factors.

After an eleven-month gap, Mumbai resumed local transportation on February 1, which before the pandemic carried an average of 8 million people per day.

The city began employing marshals to force the wearing of masks. According to city officials, about 300 of the nearly 5,000 officers are used on the rail network.

According to a media report, most Indians have removed their masks and social distancing.

“The Covid has not left the country, We still have to follow proper precautions for virus, there is no other treatment.”

India has suffered many before…

Despite the recent spike in infections, India’s daily number of new cases is well below the highest reading of nearly 100,000 since mid-September. The number of tests has dropped from more than 1 million to around 800,000 a day.

Since vaccination campaign started in January, India has administered nearly 10 million doses. It has also targeted 300 million people by August.
