TikTok climbed to the top of Cloudfare’s 2021 Year In Review Internet Rankings in February. Until August, TikTok asia had the most steady internet traffic. In the same research in 2020, TikTok has ranked eighth, with Google atop the list.

TikTok, owned by the Chinese corporation ByteDance, joined with another popular app, Musical.ly, in August 2018. After the demise of popular 7-second video app Vine at the start of 2017, internet influencers moved to Musical.ly. The app exploded in popularity after TikTok and Musical.ly merged.

During the pandemic, TikTok exploded in popularity, as people of all ages flocked to the app usually reserved for youngsters. Statistica reports a 180 percent increase in usage among 15-25 year olds.
