During the trial, Chief Justice Athar Minallah said, “If someone is saying anything wrong, let them say something wrong”. This court (IHC) does not believe in contempt of court laws to convict anyone.
The Chief Justice stated that three respected journalists are telling him such things, which he do not know. Please come forward if you know of anything like that. Don’t be shy about voicing what’s on your mind. Criticism is a source of strength for this court over the past three years.
He continued, “What I don’t know will be a matter of great pleasure for anyone who knows it to share with me. As a court, they have no fear. You get that this is simply an exercise in one’s right to free speech. However, IHC does not believe in contempt of court laws.”
Moreover, the Chief Justice expressed his pleasure at the fact that although everyone stands for office, they have no effect on the decisions made by this court. The truth will emerge naturally over time. When reporting the news, journalists need to consider whether or not their actions are ethical. The court’s rulings are always public knowledge.
When asked if journalists should conduct this kind of job, Chief Justice Athar Minallah answered, “Leave the rest”. You won’t be able to stop this court from hearing your case. Don’t stop speaking what has to spoken. The doctrine of contempt of court has not supported by this court. It’s okay to be incorrect, so long as people are allowed to express it.
