Govt may introduce legislation to prolong NAB chairmanship

The federal government is expected to present an amended ordinance to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to allow retired Justice Javed Iqbal, the NAB’s chairman, to serve for a term.

Prime Minister Imran Khan will preside over the upcoming federal cabinet meeting, at which the draught ordinance will be discussed and decided upon. The ordinance will be finalised once the Prime Minister has given his consent.

The opposition parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan People’s Party, have voiced their opposition to the extension of the chairmanship of the National Accountability Bureau by an ordinance. On October 8, the incumbent Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau, Justice (R) Javed Iqbal, will complete his four-year term.

Syed Khursheed Shah, the Leader of the Opposition, and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reached an agreement on the chairmanship on October 8, 2017. Justice Javed Iqbal was nominated to the position on the same day.
