The chairman of the prime minister’s national task force on science and technology, Dr. Atta-Ur-Rehman, warned on Wednesday that the fourth wave of the coronavirus, which carries the Indian delta variant, looks more dangerous compared to the previous waves.
Speaking to a private news channel, Dr. Atta said the country needs to bolster its mass immunity, and vaccination is needed to prevent a possible fourth wave of the pandemic.
He said the government will be forced to impose major restrictions if people do not follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and opt for vaccination doses.
Dr. Atta said the Indian variant is already “becoming the dominant strain in many parts of the world, adding, “The Indian variant (delta variant) is yet another challenge as it first appeared in India, but later spread to Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Afghanistan leading to a surge in cases where the full blockade was strictly enforced.
Atta emphasized that people, especially those living in rural areas, should get vaccinated as soon as possible, as there are large doses of corona vaccine in the country.
Responding to the consultation, he said the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) was closely monitoring the current situation and effectively handling Covid.
He warned the public that if they continue to neglect Covid’s SOPs and show irresponsible behavior, the fourth wave could become more lethal and the government will make tougher decisions.
