FIFA negotiating to kick Russia out of the World Cup

Following Russia invasion of Ukraine, FIFA is in “advanced conversations” about suspending the Russian national team from international events, including the World Cup, according to a source with knowledge of the proceedings.

According to the source, Russia would be barred from participating in the World Cup “unless the situation improves.”

The Russian national team is scheduled to meet Poland in a World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final on March 24. If they win, they will advance to the finals in Qatar later this year, where they will face either Sweden or the Czech Republic on March 29.

According to FIFA’s announcement on Sunday, Russian teams will be permitted to continue competing under the Football Union of Russia, with home games taking place on neutral territory and behind closed doors, and with the Russian flag and national song being prohibited from being used.

Cezary Kulesza, the president of the Polish Football Association, described these measures as “very unacceptable.” He also stated that Poland would not participate in its World Cup play-off against Russia “no matter what the name of the team is.”

Sweden and the Czech Republic followed suit, with Swedish Football Association chief Karl-Erik Nilsson expressing his “dissatisfaction” with FIFA’s ruling.

The World Cup draw is scheduled to take place in Doha on April 1, with the event itself taking place in November and December of that year.

Organizers of international sporting events were urged on Monday by the International Olympic Committee to bar Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from competing in international competitions “in order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and the safety of all participants.”

It is now up to UEFA to determine whether or not to remove Russia from the Women’s European Championship after the Russian city of Saint Petersburg was stripped of hosting the Champions League final this season and the game was shifted to Paris last week.

During the 16-team tournament in England, Russia will face the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland in their group, according to the official schedule.

Moreover, Spartak Moscow could also be knocked out of the Europa League.

They will face RB Leipzig of Germany in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.
