Fawad Chaudhry praises ECP committees on EVM, voting right for foreign Pakistanis

On Thursday, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry welcomed the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to establish technical committees on issues such as Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the right to vote for Pakistanis living in other countries.

In a tweet, he also stated that the government would provide full assistance to the ECP in this matter, which was received positively.

“The decision of the Election Commission to constitute technical committees on electronic voting machines and voting rights for Pakistanis living abroad is excellent. Chaudhry asserted that the decisions made by the parliament are respectful to all institutions.”

According to the minister, “the chairman and members of the Election Commission will play a critical role in these elections, and the government will give all possible help to the Election Commission.”

Last month, a joint session of parliament came to a close with the passage of 33 important acts, including the contentious Election (Second Amendment) Bill 2021 and legislation providing voting rights to Pakistanis living abroad.

The Election (Second Amendment) Bill 2021, which would allow the Election Commission of Pakistan to employ electronic voting machines (EVMs) in polls, has been one of the most contentious bills introduced by the government.

It has long been a goal of the government to include overseas Pakistanis in policy and decision-making processes, as they are regarded as a valuable resource.
