Fake results were displayed on a COVID-19 Home Testing Kit after it was hacked

In recent years, technology improvements have led to a growth in the number of home testing kits for various conditions. The kits that can downloaded into our phones and then sent online to our doctors, allowing them to monitor our health remotely. And also stay up to date with the most recent information. Although it appears to be convenient, there is a risk associated with it. Recently fake results were displayed on a COVID-19 home testing kit after it was hacked.

Ken Gannon, an F-Secure researcher, has uncovered a vulnerability in the nasal swab test given by Ellume as part of a home testing kit for the COVID-19 virus. The kit transmits data from the kit to a companion app on a smartphone through the use of Bluetooth technology. Gannon, on the other hand, was able to develop a few scripts that allowed him to alter the results of the test. The results have altered that have posted to the website because of the vulnerability.

Therefore, someone who tested negative could, for whatever reason, modify their results to positive and vice versa, and vice versa. The fact that the vulnerability existed is troubling, but it should have highlighted that this was not a very simple hack. It means that not everyone will be able to begin hacking their COVID-19 test kits right once.

The good news is that Ellume has since rectified the problem. And the firm has stated that they have followed F-suggestions Secure’s to conduct additional investigation. They will ensure that the data from their kits is accurate, as recommended.
